Great thoughts Adam overall. I think a few things to keep in mind when doing 1–1s
- Take cultural context of the person into account. If you are from different cultures, it’s absolutely important. Erin Meyers scale comparing high context and low context cultures will be of great value before beginning your 1–1s
- I like to use feedback equation to give any feedback – Situation + Observation + Impact + Open ended question. This makes sure that you are not passing judgment and simply sharing your observation. Through open ended question you show curiosity to hear their viewpoint. This enables managers to see things that they sometime miss
- Be flexible to change your opinion as a manager
- Most important – first take time to know the person well. Once you understand how they work well, you can put their strengths to use instead of focusing on their weaknesses
