I always suggest new managers to start out with the question - what do people really need from me as a manager.

This question shifts the focus of this role from "me" to "my people". Once managers are able to do that, they are able to navigate the path that enables people on their team, helps them grow their skills and most important of all build a relationship of trust and commitment.
