I typically start by looking up for the original creator of any idea and a book from them. Their ideas and theories set the ground work.

Then, if I want to read further on the topic (basically to see how other writers over the years say about it), I pick up the ones based on reviews and not best sellers or no of reviews.

I also try to read from people of different backgrounds. It just gives a better perspective on how people in different fields think about it.
