I use my own version of Halon’s razor – “Never attribute to bad intentions that which is adequately explained by ignorance, incompetence, negligence, misunderstanding, laziness or other probable causes”
Applying this simple principle in my life has helped me move beyond my natural reaction to taking a step back and evaluating the situation better.
Also, most people think that applying Occam’s razor means fast, since simple must be fast. But that’s not true. Simple can be more time consuming since it takes a lot more mental cycles to cut down the un-necessary assumptions and find a simple solution that fits well. Its a great mental model.
